Ontario was responsible for over 1/5 of the mineral production in Canada in 2011 and is a leader in safe mining. The mining sector in Canada is committed to 0 harm. The goal of safe mining is to manage risks in a responsible manner and to identify health and environmental hazards. Accident prevention and hazard recognition are top priorities. The focus is on safe material handling and proper equipment maintenance, and all miners use personal protective equipment. First aid and respirator training is provided.
Miners are thought how to recognize and avoid health hazards and are familiar with all safety and health regulations. Training focuses on excavator, crusher, crane, and mobile equipment hazards and the proper maintenance and use of equipment. The control, management, and prevention of risks associated with the transport, processing, and extraction of minerals is a top priority. There are emergency evacuation and escape plans in place. Miners follow safe working rules and are familiar with all emergency procedures that help to avoid health hazards present at mining sites.
