Explosions, satellite collision, and other events create space junk. Space debris amasses when more defunct objects, including broken satellites, space shuttles, and rocket stages, orbit the planet. The problem is that space junk orbits the Earth at a high speed. And we, humans generate a lot of trash – on Earth as well as in orbital space. The number of pieces orbiting the Earth is unknown because of their size. They are too small for the tracking technologies currently used. But the fact is that debris accumulates and at some point, humans will discover that large portions of the planet’s orbit are unusable. Sustained research efforts and collaboration are the solution.
