The Global Demands on Communication
The issue of the need for multiple language skills has been a subject of debate since the early 1950s. The post-WWII era created a movement to have more American students taking language courses to expand their skills.
It points out, for example, that many monolingual individuals start off with larger vocabularies, but over time this advantage is lessened. A surprising conclusion that is shown is that bilingual individuals are often more creative and better planners, even showing higher levels of mental health.

The infographic illustrates that the demands of multilingual speaking abilities have increased with the rapidly expanding global markets. Many countries today have multiple languages spoken within their borders.
The reality, however, is that the demand for multiple languages is actually creating an expanding market for professional translators. The demands of business are simply expanding more rapidly than the ability of businessmen to pick up the requisite skills of multiple languages.
While it is an advantage to be bilingual, the many different languages and business demands will continue to require the use of competent translators to get the job done.
